Sustain Abilities

Sustain Abilities seeks to stimulate and develop an understanding of sustainable craft and building practices by engaging children in hands-on learning environments using recycled and natural materials. Our goal is to challenge kids to think about ways that they can create useful, functional and fun structures and objects in ways which leave a minimal trace on our natural environment. Our workshops combine a mixture of up-cycling methods and bushcraft skills to give kids the power to create new projects using existing materials collected from our natural environment, as well as repurposed found or discarded objects. Through the use of natural materials, kids learn about the useful properties of a variety of plants, trees and minerals. This includes a look at our native Australian flora as well as Indigenous techniques to safely harvest and craft with these materials in ways which prolong and conserve the life of this flora for future generations to come. By up-cycling found objects, kids gain an insight into the problematic practices of throw-away consumer culture and consider ways in which they might intervene and change these practices by using what already exists rather than producing more. 

Sustain Abilities is an inclusive learning environment with activities tailor made to fit all levels of our students’ skills and abilities. We strive to nurture the creative spirit of our students while continuing to educate children about the importance of sustainable practices for themselves and the kids of the future.
